PIER Technology Demonstration

Since 2004, CIEE has assisted the California Energy Commission (CEC) in demonstrating PIER technology on higher education campuses, in state and local government facilities, in high-technology facilities, and on other sites. Through the State Partnership for Energy Efficient Demonstrations (SPEED), CIEE has helped the CEC develop a new approach in moving research and development (R&D) products into commercial use [Johnson (2008)]. This process begins with technology screening, then focuses on strategic demonstrations accompanied by case studies. Early adopters are assisted in a number of ways including aggregation of orders for volume purchases. Finally, feedback is provided from demonstrations to the development of derivative products. The Annual UC/CSU/CCC Sustainability Conference series has played a key role with conference host campuses providing a high-traffic venue for clusters of PIER product demonstrations. The current deep efficiency focus is on “50% Solutions”—technology that has the capability of cutting the energy use of a building sub-system in half. Examples include the integrated office lighting system (IOLS), demand-controlled kitchen ventilation, wireless variable-air-volume conversions and smart (bi-level) stairway and exterior lighting.
