Embedded Energy in Water

In Decision 07-12-050 (Dec. 20, 2007), the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved the Embedded Energy in Water (EEW) pilot projects. In this decision, the CPUC directed its staff and consultants to conduct several statewide studies to examine broader issues associated with embedded energy in water use in California. The CPUC contracted with CIEE to manage these Studies.

The information developed in these Studies is designed to provide a better understanding of how energy is used in the California water industry. Furthermore, the results from the Studies will be used by the CPUC in help determining whether future embedded energy in water programs should be added to the CPUC’s energy efficiency portfolio.

The three EEW studies are:

  1. The Statewide and Regional Water-Energy Relationship Study
  2. The Water Agency and Function Component Study and Embedded Energy-Water Load Profiles
  3. The End-Use Water Demand Profile Study.

The studies are continuing and interim reports are available.
