The California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) is based at the University of California, Berkeley, at the Center for Information Technology in the Interest of Society (CITRIS). CIEE puts its experts and other leading researchers from universities, government, industry, and nonprofits, to work on sustainability, climate, and energy challenges, yielding new ideas and technologies to meet California’s pace-setting goals.
CIEE is looking for passionate people who share our vision and values. A key focus for this position will be supporting multiple research projects that involve the National Science Foundation, California Public Utilities Commission, Department of Energy, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and others.
This is a contract position. Dependent upon funding, the contract may be renewed in 6 or 12-month increments. A contract appointment can be extended for a maximum total of five years.

30% Applies professional or research concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies, initiatives, /processes, and/or functions, specifically:
- Monitors timelines, budgets, and deliverables for CIEE research projects; identifies issues meeting these requirements well in advance of deadlines.
- In partnership with the CIEE Director and Deputy Director of Finance & Research Support (FRS) manages project budgets, which may include campus, grant, contract, and gift funds.
- Provides oversight with sub-awards/other agreements, including compiling required documentation, drafting scopes of work, monitoring sub-awards, including payments/invoicing, and ensuring adherence to regulations/processes, human subject protocols, and reporting requirements.
- Support for sponsor invoicing, creation, backup documentation tracking, and retention.
30% Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and/or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal or external constituents, specifically:
- Researches, writes, and edits high-level communications, publications, and reports with complex subject matter in the fields of researchers within CIEE. Assignments may include expert interviews with CIEE researchers, lay audience science articles for the CIEE website.
- Supports the development goals of the institute by creating content and campaigns in coordination with partners.
- Partners with others on the social media strategy and posting calendar.
- Supports internal communications for the institute, including staff emails concerning institute-wide news and updates, and creates content (web resources, newsletters, online forms) for partners.
20% Participates in administrative / research policy and program project planning and development, specifically:
- In partnership with the Deputy Director FRS, provides program support in the development, implementation, and management of the annual Cal Energy Corps program. Includes student recruitment, student orientation, student requirements, symposium organization, and fundraising.
- In partnership with the Deputy Director FRS, provides program support in the development, implementation, and management of the annual Art Rosenfeld Award.
- In partnership with the Enabling Technologies Program Director, provides program support for the annual ACEEE Behavior, Energy & Climate Change Conference.
- In partnership with the Director FRS, may provide program support for CITRIS programs.
- In partnership with Advanced Technological Education (ATE), Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center Manager, provides program support for Instructional Workshops.
- May involve participation in IT functions, space allocations, and other administrative duties.
10% Prepares, edits, and modifies documents including research reports, manuscripts, presentations, and proposals, specifically:
- Assists in the preparation of documents and presentations for donor/sponsor reporting as well dissemination activities.
10% Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares information for use in discussions, and meetings of internal and external constituents:
- Responsible for coordinating weekly research strategy meetings by managing relationships with leadership and research team members;
- Coordinate meeting logistics for the research projects; and
- Coordinate periodic research-related events, including requests for presentations, track team presentations, and articles.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
- Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
- Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
- Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.

- The hourly salary range designated for this position: Up to $34.00 an hour; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
- This is a one-year contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley.
