Recently, CIEE affiliate Dr. Miriam Aczel contributed to two publications that highlight the importance of aligning local and collective climate action for a sustainable future.
Aczel co-authored a study in the Journal of Cleaner Production that found a strong interdependent relationship between mangrove restoration policies and global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievements. The article describes how improved climate change performance and responsible consumption can greatly enhance the ability of mangrove forests to alleviate mangrove loss and reduce tropical storms. The researchers created an economic model that could emerge as an effective tool for policymakers to monitor long-term mangrove sustainability progress and proposed four policy priorities to help Indonesia achieve its mangrove conservation goals.

In addition, Aczel reviewed marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s book, “What If We Get It Right?” in Science Magazine, emphasizing its optimistic and actionable approach to addressing climate change. The book integrates expert interviews and essays across eight sections, advocating for sustainable solutions such as regenerative agricultural practices, collaborative urban design, and responsible climate storytelling to achieve a community-oriented vision of environmental justice.
